I've been getting somewhat irritated by seeing a lot of otherwise intelligent people getting drawn into the current NFT crypto fad.

Enabling more people to get access to the fine art capitalism money laundering game was not, actually, a good thing.

Obtaining and purchasing more virtual widgets when people are unhoused, unfed, sick, etc. is not anything resembling good.

The fact that people in general are interested in these ideas of "I own a bunch of collectible *things*" is really... IDK... capitalistic and upsetting?

I often examine myself for hypocrisy in these things, but I generally try to buy experiences. Merely owning a *thing* brings me no joy or pleasure. It's what it enables me to *do* that I enjoy, generally. Games and toys and tools and whatnot are my jam.

It's why digital collectibles in general are just so odd to me. Why do people care so much about owning a purple hat for their virtual avatar on Fortnite or Roblox?

It bugs me.

@pandora_parrot Couldn't agree more: That whole status game is so exhausting.

crypto

@jaycie I've always looked on all these status systems with a bemused confusion. People on reddit once gave me a bunch of reddit gold and karma and stuff and I was baffled by what to do with it.

It seems sometimes like people are trading in a currency that I have no use for. I wonder what that means a lot.

@pandora_parrot Up for spitballing some hypotheses?

crypto

@jaycie Sure.

I wonder if the more heavily online you are, the more you depend on the facilitation of arbitrary representations of general consensus about your value as a member of a community...

crypto

@pandora_parrot Just saw your other thread and yeah, feels like your mindset could explain a lot. Lonely and excluded people need a concrete substitute for community.

Hypothesizing a current and historical sense of sufficient social support and connectedness that one doesn't feel the lack that society tells us only money can fill.

Reminds me of my childhood self who tried getting into baseball cards as resellable collectibles. At least I mostly grew out of that.

crypto

@pandora_parrot Case in point: I'd *love* to have tons of money, but then my fantasies of winning a lottery always go directly to "Trust funds for my nephew and siblings and widowed mom and then maybe a cabin and then employing my fellow marginalized peeps by starting a game studio." Stuff like yachts don't even come to mind.

crypto

@pandora_parrot Of one has to look outside for a sense of security and belonging then that means running the rat race of status in order to extract that sense of safety from others, sometimes forcefully.

crypto

@pandora_parrot Also thinking of all those people out there following the default monogamy/marriage route only to be surprised when one person isn't enough to meet all their needs and vice versa.
