wealth frustration, ownership

Did you know that super expensive art and collectibles are free for wealthy people?

If you spend $10K on a piece of art, it will likely appreciate in value. You can eventually sell it to someone else for even more than you originally bought it for. If you're lucky, it'll be even better than inflation.

So someone else paid you to keep that art for a while.

I do not like this aspect of wealth.

I watched a video of this dude that has a massive house full of every video game console/game/arcade machine like ever... And frankly, I find it a bit grotesque.

Something like that should be in a museum for everyone to share in. Not in the hands of a private collector just "retaining value" for his net worth.

@pandora_parrot

literally awful. if he's so passionate about it, he could be a live-in curator of the museum!

@baronnarcveldt And then EVERYONE could share in that joy! Instead, he's hoarding it all for himself and I find it awful.

@baronnarcveldt This is why I find myself appreciating many of the priciples of communism. The idea of ownership of something being rewarded is to me, repugnant. No value was added to society, yet the person made money.

@pandora_parrot @baronnarcveldt I love what Neil of RMC is doing... he’s been accumulating a large collection specifically to turn it into a public museum, and he’s been documenting the process. Look Mum No Computer has been doing a similar project with The Museum of Everything too. Both are making their museums very hands-on.

It’s a shame that Paul Allen’s Living Computer Museum is dying :(

re: wealth frustration, ownership

@pandora_parrot That said, you and I both owe pretty expensive entertainment setups. I don't really see why he should be obligated to found a museum, especially given the complexities involved in maintaining a video game museum -vs- uninteractive or replaceable art.

Like, yeah, it's gratuitous, but so is owning your own personal plane :)

@erisian_phoenix you’re not wrong. But to me, this is in another class youtu.be/Ox7En_cYAa8

re: wealth frustration, ownership

@pandora_parrot Wow, that's huge o.o

I definitely wish there was an easy way to share something like that with the public, without having to worry about people damaging the collection.
