The gamification of social media REEEEEEALY bugs me.

@david I do enjoy the "giving a star" thing as a way of indicating that you've read something someone has written but don't have a lot to say about it... Stuff like that.
But I'd so much prefer that folks just... reply to one another and talk. That's the kind of interaction that I personally prefer, at least.
To be clear, I don't have a problem with likes/etc. It's the work to gamify that... To turn it into a competition... That bugs me.

@pandora_parrot Absolutely. I like that Mastodon doesn't show those stats by default. I do appreciate interaction with what I do, but I have always treated social media more like a place to make statements over hold long conversations. Mastodon in particular can feel insular on certain instances.
re: Social media meta
@pandora_parrot I really appreciate how the fediverse makes a joke out of follower numbers and like counts, which selects for the type of people who actually want to socialize :)

Gamification just bothers me in general. It is too often a disservice to the user and the experience which exploits particular impulses and tendencies without any judgment.
Beach City is our private beach-side sanctuary for close friends and awesome folks. We are various flavors of trans, queer, non-binary, polyamorous, disabled, furry, etc.

@pandora_parrot As opposed to just giving a star, how do you think you'd like social media interactions to go?
