Remember, mastodon isn't one thing.
There's furry mastodon, trans mastodon, leftist mastodon, open source mastodon, free speech mastodon, and even nazi mastodon.
What brings us all to this amorphous and vague "place" is a desire to have our own social networks where we set our own rules and define the lines of what's acceptable.
We're NOT going to all agree. But luckily, we don't even have to see each other.
One mistake I keep seeing from so many folks is thinking that the federated timeline and posts they see comprise the entire world of "mastodon" and the fediverse.
In reality, it's just a slice of the whole world.
Everyone in our space seems really leftist and queer because that's where we've landed in this fediverse.
I've visited other areas, more tech oriented places, looking for a home for my professional persona... And they're so different. Lots more "techbros" discussing open source and free speech. Also lots and lots of porn.
What part of the fediverse we see is our choice, collectively, as a community.
@pandora_parrot yeah, even I forget that masto isn’t this one entity but basically a vast network of many communities. We can regulate who and want sort of communities can be around us and that’s a very good thing.
@RussellTheFox The power to effectively create our own ad-hoc social networkS is fantastic.
Beach City is our private beach-side sanctuary for close friends and awesome folks. We are various flavors of trans, queer, non-binary, polyamorous, disabled, furry, etc.
