I've never really participated in a community. I don't quite get *how* to. But even when I've tried, I just... generally find those sorts of folks to be rather unpleasant. I relate best to awesome gentle kind queer nerds, not people generally into <thing>.
Scenes can provide a population of people with common interests to sift through looking for those folks you get along with. Of course, it helps if the scene selects for people who already meet some of your criteria. But just having a place to go where there are people you can talk to can be a valuable start.

Beach City is our private beach-side sanctuary for close friends and awesome folks. We are various flavors of trans, queer, non-binary, polyamorous, disabled, furry, etc.
